whispers to our hearts
A better choice
Than evil's anguished cries
Last night at the temple, I was helping a sister that was going through with a family name. As she began the last portion of the Endowment session, she began to weep. Salty and wet, the tears poured from this tiny sister's eyes. She was so overcome with emotion that she could barely speak. It wasn't spoken, but I knew that whoever she was doing work for was someone that she had been close to. The tears illustrated the point that this was a long time coming. You could feel to your bones the joy of both sisters.
It was a privilege to be witness to such an intimate experience. Those tears that sister cried weren't those of sorrow; but those of redemption. Tears like that only happen when the voice of goodness moves us so deeply, that it goes beyond words to express how we feel.
But evil's anguished cries... Well, those seem to be shouting at us from a thousand different sources: cries of temptation, cries of self-deprecation, envy, judgement, greed. The list goes on.
But the voice of goodness whispers the message of peace and redemption. Quiet words that move us to tears and eternal perspectives. Those quiet whispers, those quiet words, they really do give us the better choice: hope.
Loud may the sound
of hope ring till all doubt departs,
And we are bound
To Him by loving ties.
The Annunciation, 1898, Henry Ossawa Tanner
